I'm having digestive issues with Landish marine collagen. What should I do?

According to Health Canada's monograph for hydrolyzed collagen, to which Landish Pure Canadian Marine Collagen and Marine Collagen Beauty Blend conforms, a "known adverse reaction" is that it "may cause mild gastrointestinal disturbances."

Based on our experience with customers, this affects a very small percentage of people, but nonetheless does occur. Any change in dietary pattern, such as the introduction of additional protein/peptides, can cause changes in digestion. Know that this potential side effect is linked directly to the collagen itself and not to any fillers, preservatives, etc. or to any pathogens or contaminants (our marine collagen is extremely tightly controlled and lab tested to guarantee the highest level of purity and safety).

Among those who experience digestive upset related to their consumption of our marine collagen, some see this side effect go away over a relatively short period of time, and others experience continued sensitivity that may or may not become more mild with time.

If you're having digestive issues that you believe are connected to the use of our marine collagen products, we suggest considering the following:

  • If digestive upset is serious, consider stopping the use of our marine collagen products.
  • If digestive upset is mild, consider reducing your daily serving considerably and then gradually increasing it to determine your sensitivity threshold; for example, drop from 1.5 tbsp (8.3 g or 5 g) to 1 tsp (1.8 g or 1.6 g) daily for a few days, and then if this is well tolerated move to 2 tsp, and so on and so forth until you detect any sensitivity.

Note that according to Health Canada's monograph, the recommended daily serving for hydrolyzed collagen ranges from 1.2-10 g per day for joint pain, and 2.6-10 g as a source of essential amino acids. It's important to note that the higher the daily dose within that range, generally the more significant the benefits are and the more quickly they are experienced. This is why it's beneficial to figure out what your maximum tolerable daily intake of hydrolyzed collagen is.
