Hydrolyzed collagen from any source can have a distinctive taste that is more noticeable to some people than others. Note that our Pure Canadian Marine Collagen is labeled as "unflavoured" because it contains no added flavour, but it's not completely "tasteless" despite being the collagen with the most subtle taste that we know of.
While our Pure Canadian Marine Collagen carries a mild collagen taste, our Marine Collagen Beauty Blend tastes more like coconut water, with a little sweetness and tang from acerola and Marine Collagen Functional Coffee Creamer has a light, natural vanilla flavour that combines deliciously with coffee!
Aside from your palate, there are two main factors that influence the taste of collagen:
- What you're mixing the collagen into (thicker and more flavourful = less taste)
- How well the collagen is diluted (more diluted = less taste)
Many people don't mind the taste of collagen at all, but if you're not a big fan, the following may provide a solution.
What you're mixing the collagen into
For beverages, the more watery and the less flavourful they are, the more likely it is that you will taste more of the collagen. The reverse is true: the thicker and the tastier the beverage is, the less the collagen will be noticeable. Here is a list of example beverages and how noticeable the collagen taste is to most people:
Unflavoured water: most noticeable
Tea without milk* or flavoured water: noticeable, but less
Tea with milk: slightly noticeable
Coffee or juice: hardly noticeable or not noticeable
Latte (including Landish lattes), cappuccino, smoothie or shake: generally not noticeable at all
* Regular or plant-based milk (our favourite is oat milk!)
It goes without saying that concentration also plays a role. The less liquid you dilute your serving of collagen into, the more the potential for taste.
Yogurt parfaits and overnight oats are other convenient ways to consume your Landish marine collagen products. If you're tasting the collagen in one of these and would prefer not to, just add some fruit and/or peanut or nut butter.
How well the collagen is diluted
The better the collagen is diluted into your beverage, the less you will be able to taste it. Clumping will cause a noticeable taste. For hot beverages, avoid all clumping by using a handheld electric frother directly in your cup or pouring the liquid and collagen directly into an automatic countertop frother. If you don't have one of these accessories, use a whisk; a good technique is to roll it back and forth between your palms to spin it directly in your cup (an acquired skill!). Finally, for cold beverages, consider using a blender or shaker cup for maximum dilution.
